Ar an Imeall, On the Edge, brings paintings of almost 60 of Ireland’s offshore islands by artist Pamela de Brí to Esker Arts in Tullamore, running from Saturday 4 July to Saturday 26 September 2026.
De Brí painted each island as seen from the mainland shore rather than from a visit to the island itself, working to capture what she has called its essence from that fixed, distant vantage point. The bilingual show concentrates on islands that are, or were, inhabited, and deliberately leaves out islands now connected to the mainland by bridge, with the single exception of Achill. The project grew out of research inspired by historian Diarmuid Ferriter’s writing on island life and was supported by Kildare County Council’s Arts Service, and its stated aim is to record and hold on to, in de Brí’s words, the individual world that each island is and was to the people who lived, and still live, on it. Seen together, the paintings work as a record of landscapes that are steadily emptying of year-round residents, an angle that gives an otherwise scenic subject real weight. An official reception was held on 25 July 2026, and an artist talk with Pamela de Brí is scheduled for Saturday 22 August 2026, worth checking closer to the date for the exact time. The show runs the same dates as Vincent Devine’s REGENESIS retrospective in Esker Arts’ other gallery space, so a single visit to the centre takes in two very different exhibitions, one turned toward the sea and the other toward a single artist’s own history.
Esker Arts is on High Street in Tullamore town centre, within walking distance of the car parks around O’Connor Square and the town’s bus stop, and about 15 minutes on foot from Tullamore railway station on the Dublin Heuston to Galway line.
