What to Expect

A dance party built entirely around 1980s hits, run by a DJ rather than a live band, covering the decade’s biggest names in pop, new wave and rock, the kind of night built for singing along to songs everyone half remembers the words to. Expect the era’s signature sound, synths, drum machines and big choruses, across a set that runs from post punk leftovers through to full blown stadium pop. Monroe’s itself has been part of Galway’s entertainment scene since 1964, a family run pub and venue in the city’s West End that has hosted everything from nightly session music to touring bands over the decades. Monroe’s Live upstairs is set up as a proper venue floor for nights like this, with room to dance rather than just stand and watch, while the tavern downstairs keeps serving as normal for anyone after a quieter pint before or after.

Getting There

Galway city is well connected from around the country, with Irish Rail running direct services from Dublin Heuston in around two hours fifteen minutes and Bus Eireann and Citylink both running frequent coaches from Dublin, Limerick and Cork into the city’s train and bus station on Station Road. Monroe’s is on Dominick Street Upper in Galway’s West End, across the bridge from the Claddagh and a well signposted 10 to 15 minute walk from that station and from Eyre Square. The West End has a strong run of pubs either side of Monroe’s for a pre drink, and taxis are easy to find nearby for the journey home.
