Bad Mothers Union - Bennigan's Bar, Derry

At Bennigan's Bar · Orchard Street, Derry, Co. Derry

Bad Mothers Union performing at Bennigan's Bar in Derry

Bad Mothers Union are a Belfast heavy rock outfit who have been making a serious noise on the Irish live circuit, and their Friday night set at Bennigan’s Bar in Derry is the kind of show worth planning your evening around. With support from Deoch on the bill, this is a full night of loud, riff-driven music for anyone who likes their guitars turned up and their Friday evenings properly spent.

What to expect

Bad Mothers Union play a blend of heavy rock and stoner influences, with a live reputation built on high energy and punch. Their 2026 album cycle has drawn strong notices from rock press, with the band drawing comparisons to artists in the Sonic Youth and Velvet Underground lineage - though their live show leans harder and louder than that might suggest. Expect a dense, physical sound, the kind that fills a small room from floor to ceiling. Support act Deoch opens the night, so arriving before the main set is worth doing.

Bennigan’s Bar on Orchard Street is one of Derry’s best-loved independent music venues. Since opening in 2014, it has built a reputation for booking a genuinely wide range of acts - jazz, rock, alternative, folk, comedy - and the room itself has an urban, no-frills feel that suits a heavy gig well. Bands play both inside the main lounge and in the enclosed backyard, and there is a playable piano near the front that gives the place a character you do not find in bigger venues.

Getting there

Derry is well connected from Belfast, Dublin, and Donegal. Bus Éireann and Translink both run regular services into Derry city, with the main bus station on Foyle Street a short walk from Orchard Street. If you are coming by train, the Derry railway station is on Duke Street on the Waterside and a taxi or short walk across the Peace Bridge brings you into the city centre. Drivers will find pay-and-display parking around the walled city area, with Foyle Street car park close to the venue. Orchard Street itself sits just outside the walls, easily walkable from most central points.

While you’re in Derry

Derry is worth more than a single evening - the walled city, the Bogside murals, and the Guildhall are all within easy reach of Orchard Street. There is more to see in Derry and across Co. Derry.
