What to Expect

Ballybofey and Stranorlar Co-operative Livestock Mart runs its main cattle sale every Monday evening at 6pm, with viewing of the pens from around 4:30pm beforehand, plus a separate midweek sheep sale. The mart sits on Railway Road in Stranorlar, the smaller of the twin towns that face each other across the River Finn in central Donegal, and it’s one of the county’s longer standing co-operative marts, serving farmers from the Finn Valley and much of central Donegal. An evening sale time is less common than the morning sales run at some other Donegal marts, which suits farmers fitting a trip to the mart around a working day. Cattle sales here regularly draw a strong Monday crowd of buyers and sellers, and the mart continues to hold occasional special sales, including weanling and store cattle nights, on top of its normal weekly fixture.

Getting There

Stranorlar sits just off the N15, directly across the River Finn from Ballybofey, and the two towns are effectively one urban area straddling the bridge. The mart has its own yard and parking on Railway Road, close to the town centre, and is an easy stop for anyone travelling the N15 between Letterkenny and Donegal Town. Bus Éireann’s regional Donegal services stop in both Ballybofey and Stranorlar, though as with most working marts, farmers bringing livestock arrive by trailer rather than public transport.
