At Various venues, Bandon · Bandon, Co. Cork
Every August, Bandon turns its streets and historic buildings into an open-air classroom. The Bandon Walled Town Festival runs across nine days during National Heritage Week 2026, drawing on the town’s layered past - from its origins as a plantation-era fortified settlement in the early 1600s to its later life as a cotton mill town and, for a time, the whiskey capital of Ireland. If you have any curiosity about Irish history, local tradition, or the kind of stories that don’t make it into textbooks, this is a genuinely rewarding week to visit.
The festival is built around the town itself - its walls, its churches, its graveyards, and its streets. The programme mixes historical talks, guided walking tours, craft workshops, live music, theatrical performances, and family activities, most of them free. In 2026, the National Heritage Week theme is “Heritage at Risk,” and events reflect that: expect conversations about what survives, what has been lost, and what communities are doing to protect it.
Specific highlights include guided walks around Kilbrogan Church and Graveyard led by local historian John Desmond, a talk on Allman’s Distillery (once one of the largest whiskey producers in Ireland), and hands-on heritage workshops covering traditional skills like spinning and nettle-weaving. There is also a family fun day with activities for children. Christ Church - the oldest church built for Protestant worship in the Republic of Ireland - houses the West Cork Heritage Centre on North Main Street, which is worth a visit in its own right; it holds replica displays of an old shop, school, kitchen, and forge, as well as memorabilia from Bandon’s garrison-town era.
The full programme is updated as events are confirmed. Check bandonhistory.com before you travel.
Bandon sits roughly 30km southwest of Cork city on the N71. By car it is a straightforward drive of around 35 minutes from Cork. Bus Eireann runs regular services from Cork bus station to Bandon; journey time is typically under an hour. Parking in the town centre is generally available on-street and in nearby car parks, though it fills up on busier days.
The town’s self-guided heritage trail follows the line of the original walls - sections of which still stand - and links up the main points of historical interest at your own pace. It pairs well with the festival programme and adds context to everything you see. There is more to see in Bandon and across Co. Cork.
