Buncrana Country Market sets up on Church Street in the centre of Buncrana, the largest town on the Inishowen peninsula, on the second and fourth Saturday of every month from 2pm to 3pm. It runs to a short, fixed hour-long window rather than a full morning or afternoon, which keeps it a brisk, local affair aimed at people already in town for a Saturday afternoon rather than a destination shopping trip in its own right. Traders sell local crafts and produce typical of Donegal’s country market tradition, a long-running network of small co-operative markets found in towns right across the county. Buncrana itself sits on the shore of Lough Swilly and is one of Inishowen’s main service towns, so the market draws shoppers from the surrounding villages as well as the town itself.
Buncrana is on the N13/R238 corridor on the eastern side of the Inishowen peninsula, connected to Derry and Letterkenny by regular Local Link and Lough Swilly bus services, with the town’s main stops close to Church Street. On-street parking along Church Street and the adjoining town centre streets serves the market, which occupies only a small stretch of footpath for its hour-long run.
Buncrana is also a popular base for exploring the rest of Inishowen, with the seafront, Buncrana Castle and the scenic Inishowen 100 driving route all starting points within the town, so a Saturday afternoon market visit fits easily alongside a longer day out on the peninsula. Traders here follow the same twice-monthly pattern as the country market in nearby Carndonagh, giving Inishowen shoppers two separate market dates most months.
