Celtic Christian Roots is a nine-day residential retreat at An Tairseach, the Dominican-run ecology and spirituality centre on Kilmantin Hill outside Wicklow town. Led by singer-songwriter and spiritual mentor Paige Oxley, the retreat is billed as a sacred pilgrimage through the east of Ireland, reconnecting participants with the land, the saints and the deep spiritual heritage woven into Celtic Christianity. It runs from Saturday, 5 September to Sunday, 13 September 2026, and is open to all who feel drawn to explore the roots of Christian faith in Ireland, regardless of background.
Days combine visits to some of Ireland’s most significant early Christian and pre-Christian sites, including Glendalough, Newgrange, Kildare and the Book of Kells in Dublin, with quieter, contemplative work back at the centre. Participants attend Catholic Mass, share traditional Irish music sessions, and gather in intentional circles for teaching, reflection and prayer. One day is set aside for in-house study of Celtic Christian theology. An Tairseach’s own organic farm supplies a two-course dinner each evening, along with tea and coffee throughout the stay, and accommodation is provided on site for the full nine days. The retreat is framed as a journey of remembrance, blessing and renewal rather than a lecture series, and the itinerary runs from an opening circle on arrival day through to a closing ceremony before departure.
An Tairseach is on Kilmantin Hill on the edge of Wicklow town, a short drive or taxi ride from the town centre. Wicklow has its own railway station on the Dublin to Rosslare line and a Bus Éireann stop in the town centre. Onsite parking is available for anyone arriving by car.
Wicklow town itself rewards a wander before or after the retreat. The ruins of Black Castle, a Norman-era fort built in 1176, sit on the headland above the harbour, and the old Gaol tells three hundred years of the town’s harder history. There is more to see in Wicklow Town and across Co. Wicklow.
