CHAS Heritage Week Outing - Kanturk Castle and Georgian Architecture

At Kanturk town centre · Kanturk, Co. Cork

Kanturk Castle, a Jacobean tower house in north Cork

The Cork Historical and Archaeological Society brings its annual Heritage Week outing to Kanturk on Sunday 16 August 2026 - a full day in north Cork that takes in one of the most unusual castle ruins in Munster, a courthouse with a quietly fascinating restoration story, and a town centre whose Georgian streetscape has aged remarkably well. The event is free, open to both members and non-members, and guided by people who have spent years studying this part of the county.

What to expect

The group assembles at Temperance Hall on Strand Street at 11 am before setting out on a walking tour of the town. The first major stop is Kanturk Castle, a large Jacobean semi-fortified house begun around 1601 by Dermot MacDonagh MacCarthy, Lord of Duhallow. The English Privy Council ordered work stopped when they suspected the building was becoming too much of a military stronghold - leaving it permanently unfinished, four storeys of dressed stone with no roof, sitting in a field just outside town. It is managed by An Taisce and can be visited independently, but having CHAS speakers add context makes a real difference.

The courthouse is the other centrepiece. Kanturk Courthouse Restoration Committee members will present on the building’s historic architectural drawings and graffiti - fitting for Heritage Week 2026’s theme of ‘Heritage at Risk’. Speakers Patrick O’Sullivan and Noreen Barry are among those contributing. After the midday break - tea and scones are provided in Temperance Hall, or bring your own lunch - the tour moves through the Georgian streetscape that gives Kanturk its quietly elegant character.

Getting there

Kanturk sits in the Duhallow district of north Cork, roughly 40 km north of Cork city. The fastest road route from Cork is the N20 north, then the R576 west through Mallow. From Limerick, the N21 and then local roads through Charleville work well. There is no regular rail service to Kanturk itself; the nearest station is Mallow (on the Cork - Dublin line), from which a taxi is the practical option. Street parking is generally available in the town centre.

While you’re in Kanturk

The town sits on the Duhallow Way long-distance walking trail and the River Allow runs through it, making the area pleasant to explore on foot beyond the tour itself. There is more to see in Kanturk and across Co. Cork.
