Every September, the small spa town of Lisdoonvarna in the Burren transforms into the social centre of rural Ireland. The Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival - Europe’s largest matchmaking festival - draws up to 60,000 visitors across the full month, and has done so in some form since the mid-1800s, when bachelor farmers descended on the town after the harvest in search of company and a bit of craic. It suits anyone who loves live music, a proper dance floor, and the easy conversation that happens when a whole town opens its doors at once.
There is no festival gate and no wristband queue. The action spreads across every pub, hotel, and hall in Lisdoonvarna - the Ritz Hotel, the Ravine Hotel, Nelly’s Bar, and the Matchmaker Bar among them. Music and dancing start most days around noon and run well into the small hours, shifting from afternoon trad sessions into country music concerts and céilí dances as the evening builds.
The fixture everyone talks about is Willie Daly - Ireland’s last traditional matchmaker, third in his family line. He consults his worn “lucky matchmaking book,” said to have contributed to over 3,000 marriages, and takes consultations in the Matchmaker Bar. It is a genuine tradition, not a tourist act. The festival also runs The Outing - the world’s first LGBTQ+ matchmaking weekend - with drag performances, DJs, and themed parties. Most daytime sessions are free; evening dances and concerts are ticketed through individual venues.
Lisdoonvarna sits on the N67, roughly 35 km northwest of Ennis and about 5 km from the Cliffs of Moher. From Ennis, take the N85 through Ennistymon then the N67 north. Bus Eireann route 350 (Galway - Doolin - Lisdoonvarna) runs a seasonal service during September. Parking is limited on busy weekends - arriving early or staying locally is the sensible option. Accommodation books out months in advance; do not leave it until August.
The Burren and the Cliffs of Moher are a short drive away - worth a visit before or after the festival. There is more to see in Lisdoonvarna and across Co. Clare.
