Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival - Food and Local Producers

At Lisdoonvarna Town Centre and Festival Venues · Lisdoonvarna, Co. Clare

Food stalls and festival atmosphere at the Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival in September

September in Lisdoonvarna is unlike anywhere else in Ireland. The Matchmaking Festival - Europe’s largest singles event - takes over this small north Clare spa town for the entire month, drawing upwards of 60,000 visitors. Food is not a side feature here; it runs through the whole experience. Local producers, traditional Irish cooking, and one of the country’s finest pub kitchens all come together in a town that is compact enough to walk end to end in ten minutes, which makes it easy to eat and drink your way through the day.

What to expect

The town fills with food stalls and pop-up vendors throughout September, with traditional staples - Irish stew, seafood chowder, soda bread, boxty - available from vendors across the main streets and festival venues. The pace picks up considerably on weekends, when the crowds arrive in force and the atmosphere spills out of every pub doorway.

For something more considered, the Wild Honey Inn on Kincora Road holds a Michelin star and is the only Michelin-starred pub in Ireland. The cooking is seasonal and rooted in local produce; the room is informal. Booking well ahead is essential during the festival, as tables go quickly. The Burren Smokehouse visitor centre on the edge of town is one of 21 signature points on the Taste the Atlantic trail - you can watch the salmon smoking process and buy directly. The Roadside Tavern, one of the Burren’s oldest pubs, draws people in for traditional music sessions and solid pub food in an unhurried atmosphere.

Artisan producers connected to the Burren Food Trail are represented through local cafes and pop-up stalls across the month. The Burren Slow Food Festival, which typically falls during this period, gives visitors a chance to meet growers and producers in person.

Getting there

Lisdoonvarna sits on the N67 in north Clare, roughly 35km north of Ennis and 8km inland from the Cliffs of Moher. By car from Dublin, allow around three hours via the M7 and N18. Bus Eireann runs services connecting Lisdoonvarna with Ennis; check current timetables before travel. Car parking is available in town but fills quickly on busy festival weekends - arriving earlier in the day makes things easier.

While you’re in Lisdoonvarna
