Brehon Hotel Afternoon Tea

At The Brehon Hotel · Killarney, Co. Kerry

Afternoon tea service at The Brehon Hotel

Afternoon tea at The Brehon Hotel is one of those slow, unhurried ways to spend a Sunday afternoon in Killarney - and it draws both visitors and locals who want something a cut above a café lunch. The setting is a four-star hotel on the edge of Killarney National Park, the service is calm and gracious, and the food arrives on proper tiered stands with a pot of speciality tea. It suits couples, small groups of friends, and anyone who fancies a few hours of genuine comfort after a morning in the mountains or on the lakes.

What to expect

The afternoon tea runs on Sundays from 2 pm to 5 pm, and the menu covers a solid spread of sweet and savoury. Expect things like smoked salmon bites, duck liver pâté, warm mini scones, lemon drizzle cake, crème brûlée and macaroons - the kind of selection where you work your way through the tiers slowly. A range of speciality teas is included, and you can add a glass of prosecco for €8 per person if you want to make an occasion of it.

The setting adds a lot. Guests can take their tea in the mezzanine overlooking Killarney National Park, on The Brehon Lawn when the weather holds, or inside the lobby beside an open fire - a genuinely good option in August when Kerry does what Kerry does with rain. The hotel’s resident pianist plays easy-listening music throughout the service on Sundays, which keeps the atmosphere relaxed without being intrusive.

Booking is required. The hotel uses TablePath for online reservations and takes a €10 deposit per booking. Alternatively, you can call +353 (0)64 663 0700 or email info@thebrehon.com.

Getting there

Killarney is well connected by rail - the town has its own station on the Cork-to-Tralee line, with services running daily from Dublin Heuston via Cork or Mallow. By road it sits at the junction of the N22 and N71, about an hour from Cork city and roughly 3.5 hours from Dublin. The Brehon Hotel is on Muckross Road, just south of the town centre, and has on-site car parking. If you are coming from the town itself, it is a short walk or a two-minute drive.

While you’re in Killarney

An afternoon tea slots neatly into a fuller visit - the National Park trails, Ross Castle and the Gap of Dunloe are all within easy reach, and the town has plenty of traditional pubs and independent restaurants for the evening. There is more to see in Killarney and across Co. Kerry.
