At Black Box Theatre · Dyke Road, Galway City, Co. Galway
Cody Pennington is a country singer songwriter from Nashville, Tennessee, who left the city for a stint in the United States Air Force before returning to music and releasing his debut album “Downtown” in 2023. His live show mixes his own songs, including “Downtown”, “Cowboy Sitting at the Bar” and “Nothing on Us”, with covers of the contemporary country acts currently dominating the genre, Luke Combs and Morgan Wallen among them, giving the set a mix of original material and the big radio friendly choruses audiences are likely to already know. This European run is part of a wider push to build an audience for modern American country music outside the US, a genre that has grown a genuine following in Ireland over the last few years even without a large local touring circuit. Expect a full band sound, a voice built for arena sized choruses even in a room the size of the Black Box, and a set list weighted toward songs meant to be sung back at the stage.
Galway city is well connected from around the country, with Irish Rail running direct services from Dublin Heuston in around two hours fifteen minutes and Bus Eireann and Citylink both running frequent coaches from Dublin, Limerick and Cork into the city’s train and bus station. The Black Box is on Dyke Road in Galway city centre, within walking distance of that station, of Eyre Square, and a short walk from the Town Hall Theatre’s main building. On street parking is limited in the area at night, and the multi storey car parks near the city centre are the more reliable option.
