Contemporary Glass Art Exhibition

At Wexford Arts Centre · High Street, Wexford, Co. Wexford

Contemporary glass art exhibition

Glass is one of the more demanding art materials - it demands speed, heat, and real precision - so when it is handled well the results tend to stop people in their tracks. This free exhibition at Wexford Arts Centre brings together regional and visiting artists working across several different approaches to glass: blown vessels, cast forms, fused panels, cold-worked pieces and larger sculptural work. It runs from late July through to early September, long enough to visit once and then return when you have had time to think about what you saw.

What to expect

The show covers a broad range of techniques rather than a single style, so there is genuine variety from piece to piece. Blown glass tends toward the organic and fluid; cast glass captures a stillness that is almost geological; cold-worked and fused work can be graphic and precise. Some pieces in exhibitions like this are purely sculptural, while others sit in that useful grey area between functional object and artwork.

Wexford Arts Centre is housed in the Cornmarket building on High Street, a listed structure from 1776 and the oldest regional arts centre in Ireland, established in 1974. The gallery spaces are well suited to work that rewards close looking, and the central location means you can move in and out easily without it needing to be a major expedition. Admission is free, so there is no pressure to stay for a fixed amount of time.

Works in exhibitions of this kind are typically available for purchase, which makes the visit worthwhile if you are looking for something genuinely different to bring home.

Getting there

Wexford town sits at the south-eastern tip of Ireland, roughly two hours from Dublin by road via the M11 and N25. The town centre is compact and the Arts Centre on High Street is walkable from almost anywhere in it. Wexford train station on Redmond Place is served by Iarnrod Eireann from Dublin Connolly (around two hours, with several services daily). Bus Eireann also runs regular coaches from Dublin and Waterford. Parking in the town centre is available at several pay-and-display car parks, with the Paul Quay car park close to the quayside being a useful option.

While you’re in Wexford

The quayside, the narrow medieval streets and the long sandy beaches at Curracloe and Rosslare are all within easy reach. There is more to see in Wexford and across Co. Wexford.
