What to Expect

The Cuan Beo Oyster Experience is a guided half-day tour that leaves Galway city by coach and heads out to Clarinbridge, the small South Galway village long associated with the Galway native oyster. The organisers frame it as “4,000 years of oyster history in Galway,” and the tour covers that ground, from the ancient shell middens found around Galway Bay to the working oyster farms operating today, plus native oyster reef restoration work aimed at rebuilding wild stocks. Along the way there is storytelling on the traditional methods used to fish and gather oysters in the bay, and once the group reaches Clarinbridge a local oyster opener gives a live shucking demonstration before everyone gets to taste Galway Bay oysters themselves, paired with a local beer. Lunch is not included in the ticket price, so anyone who wants a proper meal in Clarinbridge should budget separately and expect to pay in the village. The coach is scheduled to depart Eyre Square at 11am and return to Galway by around 3pm, though the organisers note that can shift with traffic. The tour is one of the more hands-on ways to see the Galway oyster’s history up close, built around the story and the harvesting as much as the tasting itself, rather than just eating the result at a festival stall.

Getting There

The tour departs from Eyre Square in the centre of Galway city, an easy walk from Ceannt Station and every city-centre car park, so there is no need to arrange transport to Clarinbridge separately, the coach covers that leg as part of the ticket.
