Women in Sport Sailing Programme - Cullaun Sailing Club

At Cullaun Sailing Club · Kilkishen, Co. Clare

Women sailing on Lough Cullaun at Cullaun Sailing Club, Kilkishen

Clare Sports Partnership and Cullaun Sailing Club are running a three-evening sailing programme for women on Lough Cullaun this summer. Taking place across three consecutive Thursday evenings in late July and early August 2026, the programme is aimed at women of all experience levels - complete beginners are very much welcome, as are those who have tried sailing before and want to build confidence on the water. The setting is a sheltered freshwater lake in east Clare that the club itself describes as an ideal, safe location for learning to sail, and that reputation has drawn participants from across Clare and Limerick for decades.

What to expect

Each evening runs from 6:30pm to 9pm, giving you two and a half hours on or near the water. The three-session format is deliberate - it gives you enough time to get your bearings in the first session, practise the basics in the second, and start to feel genuinely in control by the third. Clare Sports Partnership has run Women on the Water sailing courses with Cullaun Sailing Club before, and they proved popular enough to become a recurring offering. The club is affiliated with Irish Sailing and won Club of the Year from the Irish Sailing Association, so the instruction is structured and properly supervised. You do not need to bring your own gear; equipment is provided on the day. Wear layers you do not mind getting damp, and bring footwear that can get wet.

Getting there

Kilkishen is a small village on the R462 in east Clare, roughly 12 miles from Ennis and 20 miles from Limerick. The sailing club sits on Lough Cullaunyheeda, about two miles outside the village itself. From Kilkishen, take the Tulla road for about 1.5 miles until you see the lake on your left, then follow the forest access road down to the clubhouse. There is parking on site. Public transport to Kilkishen is limited, so driving or car-sharing with another participant is the practical option.

While you’re in Kilkishen

East Clare has a quiet, unhurried quality to it - the kind of place where an evening on a lake feels exactly right. There is more to see in Kilkishen and across Co. Clare.
