What to Expect

Daoiri Farrell is a Dublin born traditional singer and bouzouki player who won the BBC Radio 2 Folk Award for Folk Singer of the Year in 2018, one of the most respected honours in UK and Irish traditional music, on the back of albums including “True Born Irishman” and “A Lifetime of Happiness”. He learned much of his repertoire directly from Dublin’s traditional singing pubs and sessions rather than through formal training, and that background shows in a style that favours storytelling and unaccompanied or lightly accompanied ballad singing alongside his own bouzouki playing. Expect a set built on Irish traditional song rather than instrumental session tunes, ballads with real historical and emotional weight, and a voice that has been widely credited with carrying the sean nos and ballad singing tradition to a new generation of listeners. This is one of the more significant traditional music bookings in Monroe’s Live’s autumn programme, closing out the venue’s October run.

Getting There

Galway city is well connected from around the country, with Irish Rail running direct services from Dublin Heuston in around two hours fifteen minutes and Bus Eireann and Citylink both running frequent coaches from Dublin, Limerick and Cork. Monroe’s is on Dominick Street Upper in Galway’s West End, across the bridge from the Claddagh and about a 10 to 15 minute walk from Eyre Square and the train and bus station, with a good choice of pubs nearby either side of the venue.
