Derry Athletics Track Meet - Summer Series 2026

At Derry Athletic Club Track · Derry Athletic Club, Brandywell Stadium, Lone Moor Road, Derry, BT48 9JF

Athletes competing on track at Derry Athletic Club

Track and field athletics in Derry on a Saturday afternoon is one of those straightforward pleasures that rarely gets the attention it deserves. Derry Athletic Club opens its summer series to spectators free of charge, and the standard of competition - drawn from clubs across Northern Ireland - makes for a genuinely absorbing few hours. Whether you follow athletics closely or are just curious, the sport rewards an afternoon of watching: the mix of sprint heats, distance races, and field events means there is constant activity from start to finish, and the atmosphere around a live track meet is quite different from watching on a screen.

What to expect

The programme covers a wide range of track distances - from the explosive 400m right through to the long-haul 10,000m - alongside field events including high jump, long jump, triple jump, and shot put. Competition runs across age groups from juvenile through to senior and masters, so you are likely to see athletes at very different stages of their careers competing on the same afternoon.

Racing begins at 3:00pm and runs through to approximately 7:00pm, with heats and finals spread across the session. Live commentary keeps spectators oriented as multiple events often run in parallel - field and track simultaneously. Results are displayed on the day. Refreshments are available on-site, and spectators are welcome to bring their own seating.

Derry Athletic Club competes within the Athletics NI structure, which governs track and field across Northern Ireland. July sits at the heart of the outdoor season, making this the kind of meet where athletes are in good form and chasing personal bests before the championship rounds later in summer.

Getting there

The club’s track is at Brandywell Stadium on Lone Moor Road, roughly 2km south-west of Derry city centre. If you are driving, on-site parking is available at the stadium. Coming by bus, local services connect the city centre to the Bogside and Brandywell area, and the stadium is also a comfortable 20-minute walk from the centre if the weather is with you. Lone Moor Road runs off the lower part of the city, and the stadium is well known locally, so it is easy enough to find.

While you’re in Derry

Derry is a genuinely compelling city - the walled city, the Bogside murals, and the Peace Bridge across the Foyle are all within easy reach of the stadium and worth an hour before or after the meet. There is more to see in Derry and across Co. Derry.
