At Ebrington Square (meeting point) · Ebrington Square, Derry BT47 6FA
A four-hour walking food tour along both banks of the River Foyle, the Foyle River Foodie Tour by Derry by Fork is one of the best ways to get under the skin of a city whose food scene has come a long way in a short time. You start on the Waterside at Ebrington Square, cross the Peace Bridge on foot, and then work your way through seven to eight stops on both the Cityside and Waterside - picking up tastings, stories and a decent amount of local knowledge along the way. It suits curious eaters, people visiting Derry for the first time, and anyone who wants to explore beyond the Walls without a map in hand.
The tour runs 10:30am to 2:30pm and is led by guides who know the city’s food makers personally. The route takes in a mix of restaurants and food stalls with a real variety of cuisines - creative brunch bites, fresh fish tacos, Asian-fusion dumplings and locally brewed craft beer all feature on the tasting trail. Named stops have included Moore on the Quay, Pyke N Pommes, Guapo, and Umi, reflecting the genuine range of independent food businesses that have set up along the riverbanks in recent years. The tour ends at the Walled City Brewery in Ebrington Square - an award-winning brewhouse and distillery in a converted Victorian military barracks - where you finish with a pint of their own-brewed beer or a gin cocktail made with their house gin. The whole route covers around four kilometres on foot across the Peace Bridge and back, so comfortable shoes are the main thing to pack.
Ebrington Square is on the Waterside of the city, just off Limavady Road (BT47 6FA). There is free parking at Ebrington Car Park adjacent to the square. On foot from the city centre, cross the Peace Bridge - a ten-minute walk from Guildhall Square. Translink bus services connect Derry Bus Centre (Foyle Street) to the Waterside; the square is a short walk from the Waterside station on the Derry - Belfast line. If you are coming from Dublin, the Bus Eireann service to Derry drops at Foyle Street.
Derry is a compact city and the Foyle River Foodie Tour gives you a solid feel for its two distinct neighbourhoods across the river. The 17th-century city walls, the Guildhall, the Museum of Free Derry and the murals of the Bogside are all within easy walking distance after the tour wraps. There is more to see in Derry and across Co. Derry.
