European Heritage Open Days - Ebrington Barracks Tour

At The Bakery Ebrington · Ebrington Street, Derry~Londonderry, BT47 6HF, Co. Derry

Visitors on a guided tour of the historic Ebrington Barracks parade ground in Derry

What to Expect

As part of European Heritage Open Days weekend, Manus Deery, Director of the Historic Environment Division, leads a one-hour guided tour of Ebrington Barracks on the Waterside. The tour covers the site’s 162-year history as a military and naval base, from its origins through the decades it served the Army and Royal Navy, through to its 2004 transfer to the Northern Ireland government as part of the Peace Dividend that followed the Good Friday Agreement. Deery explains how the barracks was preserved through years of development planning and false starts before its transformation into the cultural and events venue it is today, now home to concerts, markets and The Bakery’s food and retail units, as well as being one of the venues for Derry’s Peace Bridge crossing to the city centre. The tour is a rare chance to hear the full story of the site from someone directly involved in its heritage protection, rather than picking up fragments from information boards, and covers how planners balanced new development against retaining the barrack square, gate lodge and other historic structures. It meets at the peace tree outside The Bakery and covers firm, ramped terrain throughout, making it accessible to most visitors including those with pushchairs or limited mobility.
