Derry Greyhound Racing Track - Weekly Fixtures 2026

At Derry Greyhound Track · Derry Greyhound Track, Strand Road, Derry, BT48 7AF

Greyhound racing at Derry track

A Tuesday evening at Derry Greyhound Track is one of the more unpretentious nights out in the north-west. You don’t need to know anything about greyhound racing to enjoy it - the rhythm of the track does the work. Dogs sprint, the crowd stirs, someone collects on a hunch, and then it starts again. It suits couples looking for something different, groups after a sociable evening, and anyone who enjoyed a greyhound night anywhere before and wants to find that same energy closer to home.

What to expect

The racing programme runs to eight to ten heats across the evening, starting at 7:30pm, with each race separated by enough of a break to get to the bar, place a bet, or watch the dogs being walked to the traps. Races cover distances from sprint heats of around 300 yards up to marathon distances approaching 920 yards - the longer races in particular draw genuine tension as the pack strings out and the form book gets thrown at the wall.

Derry’s track has a grassroots character. It is a smaller, community-rooted venue compared to the big southern stadiums, and that is a good part of its appeal - you are not lost in a crowd of thousands. On-course betting is available through pari-mutuel windows and bookmakers, with the windows opening from 6:30pm. Food and drinks are served on-site. The track itself is a modern standalone facility, rebuilt as part of a £7 million development that opened in 2018, so the facilities are solid and well maintained.

Getting there

Derry sits at the head of Lough Foyle in the north-west, roughly equidistant between Belfast (about 70 miles via the A6) and Donegal Town (about 55 miles via the N13/N15). From Belfast, the Translink Enterprise coach or train to Derry runs several times a day. From Dublin, Bus Eireann and GoldLine coaches serve Derry directly. Within the city, local Translink bus routes connect the main transport hubs to the Brandywell area. If you are driving, parking is available on-site.

While you’re in Derry

Derry is a city worth giving a full day. The walled city - the only intact walled city in Ireland - is a ten-minute walk from most parts of the centre, and the Bogside murals and Museum of Free Derry are close by. There is more to see in Derry and across Co. Derry.
