At Guildhall Square · Guildhall Square, Derry, Co. Derry BT48 6AQ
Guildhall Square on the first Saturday of July is one of those mornings in Derry that earns its reputation. The Walled City Market draws together local food producers and craft makers in one of the most striking public spaces in the north - the Victorian Gothic Guildhall at your back, the old city walls rising to one side, and the River Foyle a short stroll away. Entry is free, the pace is unhurried, and it suits anyone from families with young children to visitors who want to pick up something genuinely local rather than something made in bulk. Organised by Derry City and Strabane District Council, it runs on the first Saturday of every month from February through December, with the summer dates drawing the biggest crowds.
The stalls lean heavily into food and handmade goods. You will find artisan breads and cakes, jars of homemade jam, chutney and sauces, and organic meats alongside sweet treats. Craft traders bring original paintings, natural fabrics and knitwear, and bespoke jewellery - the kind of thing you won’t find in Foyleside. Reviewers have singled out the international food vendors too; the market has a habit of attracting traders with something a little out of the ordinary, from Venezuelan street food to specialist preserves. Children’s entertainment runs through the day alongside live music, and there is usually a covered section if the weather takes its typical direction. The market runs roughly 10am to 4pm, giving you time to browse at leisure and still have the afternoon free.
Guildhall Square sits right at the core of Derry city centre and is easy to reach however you are travelling. By road, the nearest car parks are Foyle Street and the Quayside Shopping Centre; both are a short walk. If you are coming by bus, Foyle Street bus station is less than two minutes on foot - Bus Eireann and Translink services connect Derry with Belfast, Donegal, Dublin and surrounding towns. The Foyle Valley railway line links Derry to Belfast via Coleraine. From across the river, the Peace Bridge pedestrian crossing brings you directly into the square from the Ebrington car park, which is a useful overflow option on busy market days.
July is a lively month in the city, and the market fits neatly into a longer visit. The city walls - some of the best-preserved in Europe - are a five-minute walk from Guildhall Square and free to walk in full. The Museum of Free Derry, the Bogside murals, and the Guildhall itself (free to enter) are all within comfortable reach on foot. There is more to see in Derry and across Co. Derry.
