Down Royal Evening Racing - August 2026

At Down Royal Racecourse · Maze, Lisburn, BT27 5RW

Evening horse racing at Down Royal Racecourse August

Friday evening at the races is one of those summer occasions that somehow suits everyone - couples after work, groups of friends looking for something a bit different, families who want the spectacle without a full day’s commitment. The Musgrave NI Race Evening at Down Royal on 28 August 2026 is a flat race fixture on Northern Ireland’s oldest and most storied racecourse, and the evening format keeps things relaxed and sociable. It is sport you can watch at close quarters, with genuine racing action and the unhurried pace that evening meetings tend to have.

What to expect

Down Royal has been hosting racing since the early 18th century and holds a Royal Charter dating to 1685 - one of the oldest racing institutions in Ireland. The course at Maze, just outside Lisburn, runs both flat and jump racing across its 13 annual fixtures; August is flat season, and evening flat meetings here have a reputation for good atmosphere without the crowds or formality of the bigger National Hunt days in November.

Gates open at 2:30 pm for the 28 August meeting. Race times are confirmed closer to the date, but evening fixtures at Down Royal typically have five or six races running across the late afternoon and evening. Grandstand viewing gives a clear sight line down the home straight, and there are bar and catering facilities on site to suit different budgets. Smart casual dress is the general expectation - nothing too strict, but racegoers tend to make a small effort, which adds to the atmosphere. Tickets are priced from £12.

Getting there

Down Royal is at Maze, Lisburn, just off the M1 and A1 - roughly 15 km south-west of Belfast city centre, about a 20-minute drive in light traffic. From Belfast, the Enterprise and NIR rail services run to Lisburn station, from where a taxi or a short bus connection can reach the course. If you are driving, there is on-site car parking. Coming from Dublin, the M1 northbound takes you directly to the Lisburn junction.

While you’re in Antrim

Lisburn itself is worth an hour or two before the gates open - the Irish Linen Centre and Lisburn Museum tells the story of the linen trade that shaped this part of Ulster, and the riverside market area has cafes and delis good for pre-race food. There is more to see in Antrim and across Co. Antrim.
