At Down Royal Racecourse · Maze, Lisburn, BT27 5RW
An evening at the races makes for a genuinely good Friday night out, and Down Royal Racecourse delivers one of the better ones in Ulster. This flat racing fixture on 17 July 2026 is part of the summer evening programme at Northern Ireland’s only racecourse - a venue that has been running thoroughbred racing since the 17th century. You do not need to know the difference between a furlong and a fence to enjoy it; the evening format is deliberately relaxed, popular with groups, families and first-timers as much as seasoned punters.
Down Royal is a proper racecourse with a proper atmosphere. The flat summer evenings run alongside the main festival calendar and tend to draw a sociable crowd rather than a purely form-study one. Expect several races across the evening, each announced by the parade ring where you can size up the horses before they go to post.
Facilities are well above average for a regional course. The Bushmills Bar and the Dark Horse Wine Bar both have views of the finishing straight, and Curbed by Vanilla Black serves gourmet burgers and hot dogs from the catering units. There is also an outdoor paddock bar on busier days. Outside food and drink are not permitted - bag searches happen at the turnstiles - so plan to eat and drink on site. Free racecards are handed out on arrival, which is a nice touch.
Smart-casual dress is the norm for evening meetings. Sportswear is not allowed, but there is no formal dress code beyond that for a Friday evening fixture.
Down Royal Racecourse sits at Maze, just outside Lisburn, off the M1/A1 motorway corridor about 15km south-west of Belfast city centre. By car, it is roughly 20 minutes from Belfast; the postcode BT27 5RW will get you there and free parking is available a short walk from the turnstiles.
If you are coming without a car, Travel Ireland Coaches runs a return service from Donegal Square West in Belfast city centre, departing 30 minutes before the gates open - phone 02890772180 or email info@travelirelandcoaches.com to confirm times. Taxis from Belfast city centre run to around £25 and take about 20 minutes; Valuecabs operates a rank at the turnstile building for the return journey.
Lisburn itself is well worth time before or after the races if you are making a day of it - the Irish Linen Centre and the town’s compact riverside have their own appeal. The surrounding area takes in the Lagan Valley and the edge of the Mourne landscapes. There is more to see in Antrim and across Co. Antrim.
