D.R.I. at Whelan's

At Whelan's · 25 Wexford Street, Dublin 2

D.R.I. at Whelan's Dublin

D.R.I. - Dirty Rotten Imbeciles - are one of the bands that genuinely changed what heavy music could be. Formed in Houston, Texas in 1982, they spent the early part of the decade playing hardcore punk at breakneck speed before quietly, then loudly, absorbing thrash metal into their sound. The result was crossover thrash: a genre that D.R.I. essentially invented alongside a handful of peers, and one that left fingerprints all over metal, punk and extreme music for the decades that followed. The Dublin show on 18 July 2026 is a rare Irish date for a band with over forty years of furious, uncompromising live performance behind them. If you have never seen them, this is a good reason to go. If you have, you already know.

What to expect

The current D.R.I. lineup is anchored by vocalist Kurt Brecht and guitarist Spike Cassidy, both founding members. Records like Dealing With It (1985) and Crossover (1987) are the touchstones - fast, tight, lyrically sharp - and live sets draw heavily on that era without being a heritage act in the tired sense. The band still plays with conviction and speed.

Whelan’s main room holds around 450, which makes it an intimate setting for a band of this stature. General admission standing throughout, and this is a gig that earns that format - a seated D.R.I. show would be a contradiction in terms. The room is low-ceilinged enough to push the sound into the crowd, and the Wexford Street venue has been hosting bands of this calibre since 1989. Over 18s only; bring photo ID.

Doors open at 7:00pm. Support acts had not been announced at the time of writing, but check Whelan’s website as the date approaches.

Getting there

Whelan’s is on Wexford Street in Dublin 2, a short walk south from the city centre. St Stephen’s Green is roughly ten minutes on foot. The nearest LUAS stop is Harcourt Street on the Green Line, about five minutes away. Multiple Dublin Bus routes run along South Great George’s Street and Camden Street nearby. Wexford Street itself has no parking, and the surrounding area on a Saturday night is busy - public transport is the straightforward choice.

While you’re in Dublin

Dublin’s live music scene runs seven nights a week, and Wexford Street sits in one of the better parts of it, with pubs, restaurants and other venues within a short walk in any direction. There is more to see in Dublin and across Co. Dublin.
