Marty Whelan is one of those voices that has kept Irish radio company for decades, and this two-night run at Bord Gáis Energy Theatre brings his RTÉ lyric fm evening show off the airwaves and onto the stage. Joining him is the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, conducted by principal guest conductor Stephen Bell, for an evening that mixes live music with the storytelling and warmth that makes the radio programme so popular. The repertoire runs wide - Puccini, Ennio Morricone, Burt Bacharach and plenty more - so the evening suits anyone who enjoys good orchestral playing in a relaxed, entertaining setting. Previous concerts in this format sold out, so early booking is advised.
The show runs for roughly two hours including an interval, which gives you a proper night out rather than a quick set. Marty Whelan hosts from the stage, weaving anecdotes and chat between pieces, much as he does on his evening radio show. The RTÉ Concert Orchestra is the resident ensemble of RTÉ lyric fm and one of Ireland’s most experienced live orchestras, equally at home with film scores, opera highlights and popular classics. The programme moves across genres - classical arias sit alongside cinematic themes and familiar pop standards - so the atmosphere is accessible rather than formal. Doors open an hour before the performance. Note that the venue advises that production effects may include strobe lighting, smoke, and haze, and under-16s must be accompanied by a parent or guardian aged 18 or over. No children under three are permitted in the auditorium.
Bord Gáis Energy Theatre sits at Grand Canal Square in Dublin’s Docklands, about 1.8 km from the city centre. The LUAS Red Line stops at Grand Canal Dock, a short walk from the venue’s front door - this is the easiest option if you are coming from the city centre or from the west of the city. Several Dublin Bus routes serve the area, including routes along Pearse Street and the quays. If you are driving, there is an underground car park beneath the theatre which can be booked in advance through the venue website. The theatre is fully wheelchair accessible, with lift access to all seating levels and accessible toilets on site.
