Forty years. Fifteen studio albums. Over 20 million records sold. Sepultura are calling it a day after one of the longest and most influential runs in heavy metal, and they have chosen Dublin’s 3Arena as the stage for their final ever European concert. If you have followed this band at any point in your life - through the thrash fury of Beneath the Remains, the groundbreaking tribal rhythms of Roots, or anything in between - this is a show with a weight that goes well beyond a standard gig night.
The “Celebrating Life Through Death” farewell tour wraps up in Dublin, and the billing reflects the occasion. Joining Sepultura on the night are Biohazard, Sacred Reich, Malevolence, and Crypta - four bands that together cover a serious cross-section of heavy music from the late 1980s through to today. Biohazard bring their New York hardcore-metal hybrid that was a constant counterpart to Sepultura in the early 1990s; Sacred Reich are Arizona thrash veterans who never quite got the recognition they deserved; Malevolence are a Sheffield groove-metal outfit who have built a fierce following in recent years; and Crypta are a Brazilian death metal band featuring former members of Nervosa. It is a full evening of heavy music, with doors opening at 4pm and the show running from around 5pm. Sepultura’s Roots album alone has clocked 225 million Spotify streams, and the band recently brought in 23-year-old drummer Greyson Nekrutman to drive the farewell run - so expect energy on stage, not nostalgia fatigue.
3Arena sits in the Dublin Docklands on the East Wall, right beside the East Link Bridge. The Luas Red Line is the straightforward choice - The Point stop is immediately beside the venue, and you can board at Abbey Street or Jervis in the city centre, with the journey taking around 15 minutes. Dublin Bus route 151 runs to Castleforbes Road, a two-minute walk from the entrance. If you are driving, The Point Village carpark offers a €12 evening rate for concert-goers, though on a sold-out show night traffic can be slow and public transport is the easier option. Taxis and rideshares from the city centre take roughly 10 to 15 minutes outside of peak traffic.
