At River Liffey · Islandbridge, Dublin 8, Co. Dublin
A full day of competitive rowing on the River Liffey at Islandbridge, with clubs from Dublin and the surrounding region racing across multiple categories - singles, pairs, fours and eights. This is a free spectator event, and the towpath at Islandbridge is genuinely one of the better places in the city to spend a summer Saturday morning. If you have even a passing interest in sport on the water, it is worth making the short trip from the city centre.
Racing runs from 9am and typically fills the day across a programme of knockout heats. The Liffey course at Islandbridge stretches around 1,800 metres and races unfold in a head-to-head format rather than the wide multi-lane setup you get at larger international venues. That means you can follow a race from start to near-finish from a single spot on the bank, and the closeness of the water to the path makes for excellent viewing.
Clubs from across Dublin - including long-established outfits based at Islandbridge itself - compete alongside visiting clubs from Leinster and further afield. The atmosphere on the towpath is relaxed but purposeful: coaches timing runs, crews rigging boats at the boathouses, and a steady crowd watching the racing from the grass and path along the river. Races at Islandbridge are weather-dependent events, so keep an eye on the organiser’s channels if conditions look uncertain closer to the date.
Islandbridge is in Dublin 8, about 2.5 km from the city centre along the south bank of the Liffey. The easiest way in without a car is the Luas Red Line to Suir Road or Fatima, from which it is a short walk. Several Dublin Bus routes serve the area from the quays. If you are driving, street parking is available on the roads around Islandbridge and the adjacent War Memorial Gardens, though it fills quickly on event days. Arriving by bike along the Royal Canal or Liffey Greenway is a practical option from much of the city.
Islandbridge sits beside the Irish National War Memorial Gardens, a beautifully kept formal garden that is rarely crowded and worth a short walk around before or after the racing. There is more to see in Dublin and across Co. Dublin.
