At Enniskillen Castle · Castle Barrack, Enniskillen, Co. Fermanagh, BT74 7JY
Running from late June through to the end of September, Beyond - Recent Paintings by Douglas Hutton is one of the more substantial gallery shows in the north-west this summer. Hutton is a Fermanagh-based painter working primarily in oil, and this exhibition gathers his recent output in one of the most atmospheric settings a show could ask for: the medieval towers of Enniskillen Castle, right on the bank of the River Erne. If you are visiting the castle anyway, the exhibition is included in your admission and well worth the time; if the painting is your main reason to come, the castle gives you plenty more to fill the afternoon.
Hutton’s paintings are bold, expressive and richly coloured - the kind of oil work that reads well from a distance and rewards close attention in equal measure. Each canvas is built up through layers of paint, which gives the surfaces a physical depth that prints simply cannot replicate. His subjects range across seascapes, still life and portraiture, and the work is frequently in dialogue with words and poetry - some pieces carry a literary weight alongside the visual one. The title Beyond signals his central interest: capturing the atmospheric and the momentary, the thing that feels just out of reach. The exhibition runs for three months, so there is no need to rush the visit - but summer weekends at the castle can be busy, so a weekday morning is the quieter option for anyone who wants unhurried time with the work.
Enniskillen sits at the centre of County Fermanagh, roughly equidistant from Belfast and Sligo - about an hour and a quarter from Belfast via the A4, and around an hour from Sligo on the N16 connecting roads. From Dublin, allow around two and a half hours via the N3 and A509. Bus Éireann and Translink both serve Enniskillen, with coach connections from Dublin, Belfast and Sligo. The castle is a short walk from the town centre bus stops. Free car parking is available at the castle itself, which is on Castle Barrack, just off the main town approach roads.
Enniskillen is worth a proper look in its own right - the two castle museums, the lakeshore walks, and the islands visible from the Erne are all within easy reach of the castle entrance. There is more to see in Enniskillen and across Co. Fermanagh.
