Fermanagh Senior Hurling Championship

At Various Club Venues · Fermanagh, Co. Fermanagh

Fermanagh GAA hurling championship match

Hurling has a long, if hard-fought, history in County Fermanagh. The Senior Hurling Championship was first played here in 1904, and while it went through lean periods - including a gap from the late 1940s to the early 1970s - the game has survived where most predicted it wouldn’t. Today the county’s hurling scene is small and tightly knit, centred on clubs who keep the sport alive in football country. Catching a championship match here is a different experience to watching hurling in Kilkenny or Tipperary - the crowds are closer, the atmosphere more local, and you’re watching people who love the game for its own sake.

What to expect

The Fermanagh Senior Hurling Championship runs through July and August 2026, with matches played at club grounds across the county. Lisbellaw St Patrick’s, based in the village of Lisbellaw a few miles south-east of Enniskillen, are the county’s dominant senior club - they have won the championship more than 30 times and represent Fermanagh in Ulster club competition. The matches draw a tight community following: families on the touchline, club members running the gate, and a post-match pint in the clubhouse if you time it right. No big stands or corporate boxes - just the game, close up. Check fermanagh.gaa.ie for specific fixture dates and venues as the rounds are confirmed.

Getting there

Most club grounds in Fermanagh are within 20-30 minutes of Enniskillen. The town is well connected by road: Belfast is roughly 90 minutes on the A4/M1, Dublin about 2 hours via the A3/N3, and Sligo under an hour on the N16. Translink buses serve Enniskillen; for rural club venues you will need a car. Parking at GAA grounds is typically in an adjacent field - arrive a few minutes early and follow the signs.

While you’re in Enniskillen

Enniskillen sits on an island between two channels of the River Erne, and the lakelands around it are worth a full day. The town has good cafes and a strong independent pub scene. There is more to see in Enniskillen and across Co. Fermanagh.
