Enniskillen Castle is showing off one of the most significant archaeological finds ever made in the county, and it runs right through the summer and into October. Living at Drumclay: A Glimpse of Life on a Fermanagh Crannog is open at Fermanagh County Museum from 4 July to 10 October 2026, built around the excavation of Drumclay crannog, a lake dwelling on the edge of Enniskillen that was occupied from roughly the 9th century through to the 17th. It is a rare chance to see the everyday objects of that long span of life pulled from the mud of the crannog itself.
The exhibition is object-led rather than text-heavy: a wooden cheese press, a gaming board, jewellery, leather shoes and combs, all recovered from the waterlogged site during excavation. Waterlogged ground preserves organic material unusually well, which is why Drumclay has produced such a rich haul of everyday items rather than just the stone and metal that normally survives centuries underground. The exhibition is a partnership between Fermanagh County Museum, Enniskillen Castle and the Department for Communities’ Historic Environment Division, the body that oversaw the original excavation. Taken together, the objects build a picture of ordinary domestic life on the lake, working, eating, dressing and playing games, across roughly eight centuries of continuous occupation. It sits within the castle’s wider run of seven galleries covering the area’s story from prehistory to the modern day, so a visit here folds naturally into a longer look at the museum as a whole.
Enniskillen Castle stands on Castle Barrack at the edge of the town centre, a short walk from the main bus stops. Free car parking is available on site. Enniskillen is reachable from Belfast and Dublin by Translink and Bus Éireann coach services respectively.
