Fermanagh Senior Football League

At Various · Fermanagh, Co. Fermanagh

Fermanagh Senior Football League match

Saturday evening in June is prime time for club Gaelic football in Fermanagh, and the Senior Football League is where you see it at its best. This is the county-level club competition run by Fermanagh GAA, with the county’s top clubs - among them Derrygonnelly Harps, Erne Gaels Belleek, Teemore Shamrocks, Enniskillen Gaels and Devenish St. Mary’s - competing across several divisions throughout the summer. If you want to take the temperature of Gaelic games in this corner of Ulster and watch players who grew up in these townlands fight for every ball, this is the fixture list to follow.

What to expect

The Fermanagh Senior Football League runs a divisional format. Division 1 (sponsored as the Westville Hotel Senior Football League Division 1) is the top tier, with eight clubs competing across the summer months. Lower divisions run simultaneously, so on any given weekend there are multiple matches to choose from around the county. Kick-offs are typically in the early evening - around 7:00pm or 8:00pm - which makes for a good run of daylight at this time of year. Matches are played at club grounds throughout Fermanagh, so specific venues vary week to week. Check the Fermanagh GAA website for the exact fixture list before you travel; they update results and upcoming games regularly. Expect a lively sideline, passionate local support, and the kind of physical, direct Ulster football that this county has always produced.

Getting there

Enniskillen is the county town of Fermanagh and the natural hub if you are travelling from outside the county. It sits at the junction of the A4 and A32, roughly an hour’s drive from both Belfast and Sligo, and about 90 minutes from Dublin via the M1/A3. Bus Eireann and Translink both serve Enniskillen from various directions, though services to smaller club grounds can be limited - driving is the practical choice for most visitors. For matches at outlying venues across Fermanagh, a car is almost essential. Parking at GAA grounds tends to be on grass or gravel - sensible footwear is a good idea if the weather has been soft.

While you’re in Enniskillen

Fermanagh is lake country, and Enniskillen itself is built on an island between the upper and lower sections of Lough Erne - worth an hour of wandering even if you only have time before or after the match. There is more to see in Enniskillen and across Co. Fermanagh.
