Fermanagh School of Music presents Sister Act Jr

At Ardhowen Theatre · Dublin Road, Enniskillen, Co. Fermanagh

Sister Act Jr at Ardhowen Theatre

The Fermanagh School of Music and Performing Arts brings its annual junior musical to the Ardhowen Theatre this summer, and Sister Act Jr is a strong pick for families, drama enthusiasts, and anyone who enjoys a show full of gospel numbers and broad comedy. Run by Ciara O’Flanagan and based in Enniskillen, the school has staged productions at the Ardhowen for years - Into the Woods was their 2022 outing - so this is a group with form on a proper stage, not a school hall. Four nights, all at 7:30pm across the last days of July and into August, mean you can pick your evening without rushing.

What to expect

Sister Act Jr follows Deloris Van Cartier, a disco singer who witnesses a murder and ends up hidden in the last place anyone would look for her - a convent. Disguised as a nun, she clashes with the Mother Superior, gradually wins over the community, and turns the choir into something the neighbourhood cannot ignore. The junior adaptation keeps the spirit of the 1992 film and the Tony-nominated Broadway show intact, with original music by Alan Menken driving the gospel numbers and choreography through the production.

Because this is a youth cast from the Fermanagh School of Music, the performances carry that particular energy you only get when young performers are genuinely invested in what they are doing - a refreshing alternative to professional touring productions. Note that a smoke and haze machine and flashing lights will be used during the show, worth knowing if anyone in your group has sensitivities. If the main auditorium sells out, a limited number of seats at the front of Row A may become available, but those come with restricted sightlines.

Getting there

Enniskillen sits roughly at the centre of County Fermanagh, straddling the River Erne where it narrows between Upper and Lower Lough Erne. From Belfast, it is about 90 minutes on the A4 westbound; from Dublin, allow around two hours via the A3 through Monaghan. The Ardhowen is on Dublin Road, just south of the town centre, with its own car park on site. Space can get tight before a sold-out show, so arriving early is wise. Celtic Park car park, a five-minute walk away, is a useful overflow option. Bus Eireann and Translink services connect Enniskillen with Dublin, Belfast, and surrounding towns; the theatre is a short walk or taxi ride from the bus station on Wellington Road.

While you’re in Enniskillen

Enniskillen is worth a proper look - the island town has Enniskillen Castle sitting above the river, independent cafes and good food, and the lough within easy reach for walks or boat trips. There is more to see in Enniskillen and across Co. Fermanagh.
