Knocks Drama Group presents Family Affairs

Knocks Drama Group bring their touring production of Family Affairs to the Ardhowen Theatre on 25 and 26 June, rounding off a well-travelled season for the group. Written by William Rocke and directed by Martin McManus and Una Rice, this is a proper community theatre night - the kind where the cast are people from your county performing to an audience who wants to see them succeed. If you enjoy sharp comic timing, a tangled plot, and the odd burst of saucy dialogue, this is the sort of evening worth going out for.

What to expect

Family Affairs centres on Gerard Morley, a PR executive and widower who has things fairly well arranged - a luxury flat, a reliable manservant, a studious son. Things collapse when his brother Father Joe returns from missionary work in Africa wanting a more lively life, and a forceful woman named Matilda arrives asking questions about Gerard’s dealings with her daughter - then redirects her attention toward the newly secular priest. Cast member Jim McConnell describes it as “a whirlwind of comic confusion, mistaken assumptions and colourful personalities.” The play runs 2 hours 15 minutes and contains some language, so it is aimed at adults. Knocks Drama Group have already played it at Knocks Community Hall, Newbliss Community Centre and Iontas Theatre in Castleblayney - by this point in the tour the cast will be well settled into it.

Getting there

Ardhowen Theatre sits on Dublin Road on the southern edge of Enniskillen, easy to find coming in from the A4 or A32. There is on-site parking at the venue. Translink and Bus Eireann serve Enniskillen from Monaghan, Clones and Sligo, though last buses back may not suit an 8pm curtain - check times if you are relying on public transport. Driving from Co. Monaghan or Cavan takes around 40-50 minutes.

While you’re in Enniskillen

Enniskillen is a good town to spend time in before the curtain - the town centre, Enniskillen Castle and the lakeshore are all within easy walking distance of the theatre. There is more to see in Enniskillen and across Co. Fermanagh.
