At Monroe's Live · Dominick Street Upper, Galway City, Co. Galway
Fontaines C.D., a five piece built specifically to recreate the sound of Dublin post punk band Fontaines D.C., work through the driving rhythms, jagged guitar and distinctive spoken sung vocal delivery that made the original band one of the most acclaimed Irish acts of their generation. Expect a setlist built around fan favourites, “Big”, “Boys in the Better Land”, “Starburster” and “I Love You” among the tracks likely to feature, played with the raw energy the originals are known for rather than a softened or radio friendly version. Fontaines D.C. built their reputation on a combination of literary, often bleak lyricism and a genuinely powerful live show, and a tribute act taking that on has to match both the sound and the intensity to work, since neither the songs nor the band’s reputation leave much room for a lightweight interpretation. Given how recently Fontaines D.C. themselves have become a major touring act, this is likely to draw a young, engaged crowd who know the records well.
Galway city is well connected from around the country, with Irish Rail running direct services from Dublin Heuston in around two hours fifteen minutes and Bus Eireann and Citylink both running frequent coaches from Dublin, Limerick and Cork. Monroe’s is on Dominick Street Upper in Galway’s West End, across the bridge from the Claddagh and about a 10 to 15 minute walk from Eyre Square and the train and bus station, with a good choice of pubs nearby either side of the venue.
