What to Expect

Fore Abbey is a 13th-century Benedictine monastery set in the scenic Fore Valley. The site comprises substantial ruins of the abbey church, domestic buildings, cloister, and associated monastic structures. The landscape itself - a glacially formed valley with seven Catholic holy wells - has been a place of pilgrimage and settlement since early Christian times. Visitors walk through the ruins and explore the broader heritage landscape including St. Fechin’s Church and nearby holy wells.

Good to Know

Fore Abbey is an open-air historical site with no formal admission charge or visitor facilities. Access is on foot across farmland; there is no car park at the site itself. Parking available in Fore village (short walk). Site is exposed to weather; wear appropriate footwear and clothing. The village of Fore has a small heritage centre and tea rooms.

Getting There

Fore village is 10km north of Castlepollard, signposted from the N4 and local roads. Access on foot from Fore village car park. Nearest town is Castlepollard (bus and car access); Mullingar is 20km to the south.
