Frank Kilrane 10 Mile Road Race (Edenderry)

At Edenderry · Edenderry, Co. Offaly

Frank Kilrane 10 Mile Road Race, Edenderry

Every July, Edenderry AC brings hundreds of runners to the roads of this Offaly market town for one of the midlands’ most established 10-mile races. The Frank Kilrane 10 Mile is a memorial race honouring a long-serving stalwart of Edenderry AC, a club figure who has given decades to local athletics - and who has been known to present prizes on the day himself. It is a proper road race with proper competition: county championship status, cash prizes for the top three men and women, age-category prizes from O40 through to O70, and a course record bonus for anyone running quick enough. With 351 finishers recorded in recent years, it draws a strong field from across Offaly and neighbouring counties. Runners of all paces are welcome; medals go to every finisher and the first 300 registered receive a technical t-shirt.

What to expect

The course is fair but honest - several rolling hills and short drags make this a genuine test over the full 10 miles, not a flat circuit for chasing PBs. The race starts at 9:30am on a Sunday morning, which suits the distance and keeps the midlands summer heat manageable. Organisation is thorough, with ample marshals on the route and a smooth finish area. The Frank Kilrane Cup is awarded to the first Offaly man and woman home, adding a county championship dimension alongside the Peugeot Race Series and Offaly Endurance Series placings. Entry is free. Registration is managed through Pop Up Races (popupraces.ie) - check there for the link and to confirm any pre-registration requirement for the t-shirt.

Getting there

Edenderry sits roughly equidistant between Dublin and Athlone in the north of County Offaly. By car from Dublin, take the M4 motorway to Junction 9 at Enfield, then follow the R402 west into town - around 60 km and just under an hour. From Tullamore, the R402 runs northeast and takes about 25 minutes. Bus Eireann route 120C connects Tullamore to Edenderry with several daily services, stopping near the Town Hall. Parking in Edenderry town centre is pay-and-display; street parking is available on the main approach roads for a race morning.

While you’re in Edenderry

Edenderry has a compact town centre with cafes worth stopping into after the race, and the Grand Canal passes nearby for a quiet walk while legs recover. There is more to see in Edenderry and across Co. Offaly.
