What to Expect

The Joyce Country Challenge offers walkers a rare chance to explore one of Ireland’s most breathtaking hidden landscapes. Set in the heart of the Joyce Country, this event showcases a stunning circuit around Lough Nafooey, featuring the rugged plateau of Maumtrasna and the commanding Devil’s Mother. Walkers will enjoy panoramic views of the Maamturks, Mweelrea, Killary Harbour, the Sheefry Hills, and the Western Lakes. Four different walks cater to varying fitness and experience levels.

Good to Know

  • Four walk options available:
    • Challenge Walk (A): 30km, 1,750m ascent, self-navigated, for experienced hikers (start 06:30-07:30)
    • Walk B: 20km, 750m ascent, guided, intermediate level (start 08:00)
    • Walk C: Gentler introduction to hillwalking with shorter route (start 10:00)
    • Additional easier option available
  • Proceeds support both Galway Hospice and Mayo/Roscommon Hospice Foundations
  • Registration at Finny Community Centre
  • Spectacular mountain scenery and experienced guides

Located at Finny Community Centre in Co. Mayo, in the heart of Joyce Country. This area borders County Galway and is approximately one hour from Galway City centre. Detailed directions available from the organizers.
