Galway Skate Festival with Family Activities

At Millennium Skate Park and Eyre Square · Galway City Centre

Skaters and families enjoying skateboarding festival

The Galway Skate Festival is Ireland’s only dedicated skateboarding festival, and in 2026 it celebrates its sixth edition. Run entirely free of charge by the Galway Skateboard Association, it takes over the city centre for four days, drawing skaters and curious onlookers alike to Millennium Skate Park on Nun’s Island and Eyre Square. If you have a child who is angling for a first go on a board, or a teenager who already spends weekends at the local ramp, this is the easiest introduction to skate culture you’ll find anywhere in Ireland - with no ticket barrier and a genuine community atmosphere behind it.

What to expect

Over 15 events are spread across the city across the weekend, ranging from structured competitions to open sessions. The skate competitions cover a range of formats - races, best trick contests, and the eagerly anticipated Cash Money Game of Skate on the Sunday, where competitors square off head to head in a call-and-respond format. There are dedicated sessions specifically for girls, queer, and trans skaters, making a point of widening who feels at home at a skate event. Beginners and younger kids are looked after too, with lessons on offer for those who have never stepped on a board. Beyond the skating, the festival has the feel of a summer party: the Big Dipper ride runs throughout, pub quizzes are on the programme, and live music plays every evening. The weekend kicks off on the Friday at a secret daytime location - worth following the Galway Skateboard Association on social media to find out where that lands.

Getting there

Galway city is well served by Bus Éireann and Citylink coaches from Dublin, Limerick, Cork, and Sligo, arriving into Ceannt Station on Station Road, a short walk from Eyre Square. By car, Galway sits on the M6 motorway from Dublin; the city-centre car parks on Merchant’s Road and Jurys Inn are within easy reach of Eyre Square, and Millennium Skate Park on Nun’s Island is a ten-minute walk from there. Galway is a very walkable city, so once you’re in, there is little need to move the car for the rest of the day.

While you’re in Galway

A skate festival in Galway makes for a fine excuse to spend the afternoon around the Latin Quarter, grab food on Shop Street, or walk along the River Corrib. There is more to see in Galway and across Co. Galway.
