At Community Park, Athenry Castle, Heritage Center, Community Hall · Athenry, Co. Galway
Athenry Walled Towns Day is one of the most genuine free festivals in the west of Ireland - a full afternoon of medieval activity that draws up to 5,000 people into one of the country’s best-preserved medieval towns. Running since 2006 and organised by Athenry Heritage Centre in partnership with Galway County Council, it opens up the castle, the community park, the heritage centre and the community hall for a single afternoon each August. Families with children, history enthusiasts, and anyone who wants a proper day out without spending a penny will all find plenty to hold their attention.
The programme is built around the Anglo-Norman heritage that shaped Athenry in the 13th century. Falconry displays are a reliable highlight - watching trained birds of prey work against the backdrop of the old town walls is the kind of thing that sticks with you. Have-a-go archery lets visitors test their aim rather than just watch, and battle reenactments with weaponry displays fill the community park with the noise and theatre of medieval combat.
Inside Athenry Castle itself, the Great Hall hosts medieval music and storytelling, bringing a quieter but equally absorbing side of the programme indoors. Children’s craft workshops run across the sites, and puppet shows keep younger visitors occupied while adults wander. Local craft and artisan food producers set up stalls alongside the heritage activities, so there is food and browsing as well as spectacle. The whole thing runs free of charge - no booking, no entry fee, just turn up.
Athenry is in east Galway, about 25 km east of Galway City. By road, take the N6 east from Galway and follow signs for Athenry - the drive takes under 30 minutes. Irish Rail runs regular services on the Galway to Dublin Heuston line, stopping at Athenry station, which is a short walk from the town centre. The festival venues are all within easy walking distance of each other in the town. Parking is available in the town, though it will be busy on the day given the expected crowd - arriving by train is a practical option.
The medieval town walls, the Dominican Priory ruins, and the castle itself are all worth time outside the festival programme. There is more to see in Athenry and across Co. Galway.
