Galway Docklands Festival 2026

At Galway Docklands, Galway Harbour, The Claddagh · Galway City, Co. Galway

Galway Docklands Festival 2026

The Galway Docklands Festival runs across three days in late September, bringing together the working waterfront, traditional boats, and fresh seafood at Galway Harbour and the Claddagh. Organised by the Galway Hooker Sailing Club - a group founded in 2019 that has already restored a fleet of eleven traditional Hookers - the festival was started in 2022 to revive awareness of Galway’s deep maritime past. It is free to attend, family-friendly, and timed to coincide with the wider Galway International Oyster Festival season, so the city is lively all weekend.

What to expect

The programme centres on the docks, the Claddagh basin, and Galway Bay itself. Expect to walk the docklands on guided heritage tours, watch boat builders at work and listen to talks on traditional boatbuilding and rigging techniques. The Galway Hooker Sailing Club brings their restored vessels alongside so you can get up close to these distinctive black-sailed craft that were once the workhorses of Connacht’s coastal trade.

Boat trips run out through the Claddagh and onto Galway Bay - a straightforward way to see the city from the water and understand why the bay shaped life here for centuries. There are supervised motorboat experiences for younger visitors, sea-themed craft workshops, and art contests running through the weekend.

Seafood is central to the event. Local catches are served alongside regional beers, and the general atmosphere is more community celebration than ticketed festival - food trucks, local stalls, and a Parade of Sail round it off. Proceeds benefit Ability West and the RNLI.

Getting there

Galway city is well connected by road and rail. The M6 motorway runs directly into the city from Dublin (roughly two and a quarter hours); from the south, the N18 comes up through Limerick and Gort. Irish Rail runs frequent services from Dublin Heuston (roughly two and a quarter hours) and from Limerick Junction. The docklands area sits a short walk south-east of Eyre Square along the river Corrib, easily reached on foot from the city centre or from the bus and rail stations. Parking in the docklands area can be tight on festival days; the Long Walk car park is the nearest option, but arriving by public transport or cycling in is more straightforward.

While you’re in Galway

The festival weekend puts you right in the middle of Galway’s festival season - the Oyster Festival, the Latin Quarter, the Spanish Arch, and the Saturday market at St Nicholas’ Church are all within easy reach. There is more to see in Galway and across Co. Galway.
