What to Expect

An Púcán runs live entertainment seven nights a week across its two rooms just off Eyre Square, but Friday and Saturday are when the venue tips over from pub into part-time club. The Front Bar keeps its traditional Irish music sessions going nightly - fiddles, flutes, bodhráns and acoustic sets for anyone after a trad night out, and it’s a reliable spot even on a quiet midweek evening. Through in the Back Bar, live cover bands take over on Friday and Saturday evenings, and on Saturdays a resident DJ follows the band once the tables and chairs are cleared to open up a proper dance floor. It stays busy and loud until around 2am, later than most of the pubs around it, which is part of why it draws a crowd that would otherwise be heading straight for a dedicated nightclub. The two rooms give it a split personality - you can start the night in the Front Bar for a trad session and a quieter pint, then drift back to catch the band and stay on for the DJ set once things pick up.

Getting There

An Púcán is at 11 Forster Street, just off Eyre Square in Galway City, a short walk from Ceannt Station (bus and rail) and in the thick of the city centre’s main pub circuit, so it’s an easy stop on a wider night out without needing a taxi between venues. It’s also close enough to Eyre Square’s taxi rank to make it a sensible last or first stop of the evening if you’re staying outside the city centre.
