Streets of Galway 8K Road Race 2026

At Galway City Streets · Starting point in Galway city centre, Co. Galway

Galway street running event

The Medtronic Streets of Galway 8K Road Race is one of those events that has genuinely earned its reputation. Running for 40 years since it first took to the city streets in 1986, this is the highlight of the Galway athletics calendar and one of the most prestigious road races in the country. Organised by Galway City Harriers, the club that has been running in this city since 1899, the race draws up to 4,000 participants - competitive club runners chasing times alongside recreational joggers out for the atmosphere. If you have ever wanted a reason to see Galway at its best, an August evening race through the old medieval lanes and along the bay is a solid one.

What to expect

The route is the real draw. Starting at Fr Griffin Road and finishing at the historic Claddagh, the 8K course threads through the centre of the city and out to the coast before sweeping back in. Runners pass the Spanish Arch, cut through to Eyre Square, cross the Salmon Weir Bridge, loop past the landmark Galway Cathedral and the University of Galway, then head out through Salthill past Pearse Stadium. The final stretch comes along the Prom on Galway Bay - a fast, flat run beside the water with the finish at the Claddagh ahead. The course is officially rated fast and flat with just 25 metres of ascent, so times tend to be good. Expect road closures across the city centre from early evening, strong local crowd support along the route, and a genuine festival feel. The 2026 edition sold out, so registration for future years is worth doing early when entry opens.

Getting there

Galway city is well served by road and rail. From Dublin, the M6 motorway brings you to the city in around two hours; from Cork, the N18 via Limerick takes around two and a half. Irish Rail runs regular intercity services from Dublin Heuston to Galway station, which is a short walk from the city centre start area. Bus Éireann and Citylink coaches also run frequent services from Dublin, Cork, Limerick and other major towns. On race night, road closures will affect city centre traffic, so parking in one of the outer car parks - Westside Shopping Centre or the Park and Ride - and walking or taking a taxi in is a sensible approach. Given the 7pm start, arriving by 6pm gives you time to get settled.

While you’re in Galway

Galway repays a longer visit - the Latin Quarter, the Salthill promenade and the Aran Islands ferry are all easy from the city. There is more to see in Galway and across Co. Galway.
