Myra’s Story comes to Town Hall Theatre for two nights this September, a solo play written by Brian Foster and performed by Fionna Hewitt-Twamley. It arrives in Galway with a long touring history behind it: a four-time hit at the Edinburgh Fringe and a West End run, billed by the theatre as a critically acclaimed production and a powerful story of resilience. It suits anyone who likes character-driven, text-led theatre rather than large-cast spectacle.
Myra is a middle-aged Dubliner living rough, begging at the Ha’penny Bridge, and the play is her account of how she got there - the funny, the tragic and the heart-wrenching turns that took her from a family life to the streets. Hewitt-Twamley carries the stage alone, playing Myra and stepping in and out of the larger-than-life Dublin characters who populate her story; WhatsOnStage called it a vivid, virtuoso performance. The humour is as much a part of it as the hardship, and the piece leans on compassion rather than misery, which is a large part of why it has kept touring.
As a one-woman show staged in Galway’s main civic theatre, it rewards a full house and a quiet room, given the demands a solo performance places on both actor and audience.
Performances run Friday 4 and Saturday 5 September, both at 8pm. Tickets are €25 and go through the Town Hall Theatre box office and its website.
Town Hall Theatre sits on Courthouse Square in the centre of Galway city, a short walk from Eyre Square and the city’s main bus and rail connections. Bus Eireann and GoBus run frequent services into Galway from Dublin, Limerick and Sligo, and Galway train station (Ceannt Station) is about a ten-minute walk from the theatre. Drivers will find the closest city-centre car parks on Merchant’s Road and at Jurys Inn; street parking in the immediate area is limited in the evenings, especially on performance nights.
