At The Mall Theatre · Tuam, Co. Galway
Culture Night in Tuam brings something genuinely different this September. Tiny Mutiny is an artist development programme run by Galway County Council Arts Office and Sparkcatchers - artists and producers Jojo Hynes and Midie Corcoran - that gives teenagers from across County Galway the resources, mentorship, and time to make real work on their own terms. The September 18 showcase at The Mall Theatre is the night it all comes together: a public presentation of brand-new work created by six young Galway artists over the summer, spanning music, literature, film, visual art, illustration, and poetry. It suits anyone who is curious about what young people are actually making right now, and what the next generation of Irish artists looks like when they are given proper support.
The 2026 cohort includes four Project Award recipients - Liam Ó Connor (music, Tuam), Alannah Caddye (literature, Glenamaddy), Lauren Caine (film, Oughterard), and Harlow Slattery Madden (visual art, Loughrea) - plus two First Sparks masterclass recipients, Lainey Tighe and Lia Mae Coen (illustration, Tuam) and Abigale Heavey (poetry, Newbridge). Each artist worked with a professional mentor from the Irish arts sector across the summer, with a dedicated production budget behind their projects. The showcase is the first public airing of the finished work. Expect a short, programme-led event rather than a long evening - this is a celebration of process as much as product, and the work will be raw and personal in the best sense.
The Mall Theatre itself seats around 217 people and has been a performing arts anchor in Tuam since it reopened as an arts centre in 1993, having started life as a cinema back in 1917. It is an intimate room, which suits this kind of work well.
Tuam is about 25 kilometres north of Galway City, straight up the N17 - a straightforward 25-minute drive. From Galway City, Bus Éireann route 423 (Galway - Charlestown) stops in Tuam and runs several times daily. The Mall Theatre is on Stable Lane in the town centre and parking is available in Tuam town, with spaces close to the venue on the main streets.
Tuam is a market town with a long history - the High Cross in the town square dates to the early medieval period, and the Cathedral of the Assumption is worth a look if you have time before the event. There is more to see in Tuam and across Co. Galway.
