At Glaslough Village · Glaslough, Co. Monaghan
Every last Saturday from April through November, the main street of Glaslough fills with over 30 market stalls, run by Glaslough Tidy Towns as a community enterprise that grew directly out of a Covid Acceleration Grant in 2020. The grant let the group buy the gazebos that now go up each month, rain or shine. It is a free event, which makes it an easy morning out for anyone passing through Monaghan or staying at nearby Castle Leslie Estate - though once you start browsing the food and craft stalls, four hours pass quickly. Good for families, good for solo visitors, good for couples looking for a relaxed Saturday.
The market runs from 10am to 4pm and typically draws more than 30 stall holders. The mix covers arts and crafts, baked goods, and street food - so you can pick up a handmade piece and eat lunch in the same visit. The range shifts with the seasons and who applies to trade each month, which means there is usually something different from visit to visit. The organisers are Glaslough Tidy Towns, a group with a track record in the village: they have won County First and a Gold Medal in the Monaghan Tidy Towns competition, and the market is one of several projects they run to keep the village active. The setting - the village itself, beside the gates of Castle Leslie - is as good as any market backdrop in the county.
Glaslough is about 10 km north-east of Monaghan town on the R185. By car, take the R185 from Monaghan town or approach from Emyvale on the R185 from the north. There is no regular bus service directly to the village, so a car is the practical option for most visitors. Parking is available in and around the village on street - the village is small and compact, so a short walk from wherever you park is typical.
The market is a good reason to spend a couple of hours in the village, and Castle Leslie Estate - with its gardens and walking trails - is right on the doorstep for anyone wanting to extend the visit. There is more to see in Glaslough and across Co. Monaghan.
