Her Outdoors: Try Surfing, Spanish Point

At Spanish Point Beach · Spanish Point, Co. Clare

Women learning to surf with an instructor at Spanish Point beach

What to Expect

This hour-long taster session introduces adult women to surfing at Spanish Point, one of Clare’s better-known beginner surf beaches, delivered by Celtic Surf School as part of Clare Sports Partnership’s Her Outdoors programme. It is built for women who have never surfed before: instructors run through beach safety, how to carry and paddle a board, and how to pop up to standing, before getting everyone into the whitewater to practise catching small, broken waves. Spanish Point’s gently sloping sandy bottom and consistent whitewater make it one of the more forgiving spots on the Clare coast to learn, which is part of why local surf schools use it for beginner lessons rather than the more exposed reef and point breaks further north around Lahinch and Doolin. Wetsuits, boards and all other equipment are provided, so nobody needs their own gear or prior experience, and the session runs regardless of a group’s mixed fitness levels since the instructor paces it to the slowest learner rather than the fastest.

Getting There

Spanish Point is on the west Clare coast between Miltown Malbay and Quilty, with a car park directly behind the beach. The wider bay is a popular surf and swim spot in its own right, with a promenade walk above the beach and a scatter of low rock reef at each end worth avoiding until you have your bearings in the water.
