Horseleap Round Tower - Medieval Heritage Site

What to Expect

Horseleap Round Tower is a well-preserved 12th-century round tower with attached gateway, representing a rare example of Norman fortification in Westmeath countryside. The tower was built as a defensive strongpoint. The site is maintained by the Office of Public Works. Visitors can view the exterior architecture and explore the surrounding landscape where further archaeological features may be visible.

Horseleap Round Tower is an open-air historical site with no formal admission charge. The site is accessible on foot from nearby roadside. There are no visitor facilities on site. The tower is unstable and should not be entered; viewing is from the exterior only. Horseleap village is nearby with basic amenities.

Getting There

Horseleap is in the south-west of County Westmeath, approximately 20km from Mullingar and 10km from Athlone. The tower is signposted from local roads. Access by car with roadside parking; also accessible by local bus (limited services).
