Johnny Marr - Live at Iveagh Gardens

At Iveagh Gardens · Clonmel Street, Dublin 2

Johnny Marr performing live at Iveagh Gardens Dublin

Johnny Marr at the Iveagh Gardens is one of those shows that would stand out in any summer programme. The Smiths co-founder and one of the most copied guitarists of the post-punk era, Marr has built a solo career that holds its own alongside that legendary back catalogue - and his live show draws from both. This is his first Dublin solo headline since 2018, and for anyone who grew up with The Queen Is Dead on the turntable, that gap alone makes it worth clearing the diary.

What to expect

Iveagh Gardens suits Marr well. The setting is intimate by outdoor concert standards - capacity tops out around 5,000 - so you are never far from the stage. The sunken lawn keeps sightlines good from most spots, and the gardens themselves give the evening a character that a standard arena or festival field cannot match. Expect a set that moves between his three solo albums - The Messenger, Playland and Fever Dreams Pts 1-4 - and Smiths songs delivered with the authority of the man who wrote the guitar parts. Support acts have not been confirmed at time of writing, but Aiken Promotions typically programme complementary acts for the Iveagh series.

Gates open at 6:30pm. It is an outdoor standing show, so dress for a July evening in Dublin, which means a layer you do not mind carrying. Bag restrictions are in place - check the Ticketmaster event page for the current policy before you go.

Getting there

Iveagh Gardens sits off Harcourt Street in Dublin 2, entered from Clonmel Street. The Luas Green Line stops at Harcourt, two minutes on foot. Dublin Bus serves the area heavily from the city centre. Driving is not recommended - street parking is scarce around Harcourt Street on summer evenings, and the nearest public car parks (Q-Park on St Stephen’s Green and Mobypark on Earlsfort Terrace) are a five-minute walk. Cycling is a good option; there are bike docks on Harcourt Street.

While you’re in Dublin

The gardens are a short walk from Grafton Street, St Stephen’s Green and the Iveagh Trust buildings - a fine part of the city to arrive into early and make an afternoon of it before the gates open. There is more to see in Dublin and across Co. Dublin.
