Reek Sunday - Croagh Patrick Pilgrimage

At Croagh Patrick · Croagh Patrick, Murrisk, Co. Mayo

Pilgrims climbing Croagh Patrick mountain on Reek Sunday

What to Expect

Reek Sunday, held on the last Sunday in July, is one of Ireland’s most significant pilgrimages. Approximately 20,000 to 30,000 pilgrims climb Ireland’s holiest mountain in honour of Saint Patrick, who according to tradition spent 40 days fasting on the mountain in 441 AD. The pilgrimage involves traditional rituals including praying while walking sunwise around mountain features: seven times around Benan’s grave cairn, fifteen times around the summit perimeter, seven times around Patrick’s bed, and seven times around three ancient burial cairns. Many pilgrims climb barefoot.
