At Gleneagle Arena · Muckross Road, Killarney, Co. Kerry
Killarney’s biggest indoor entertainment venue gets taken over by dinosaurs this August, as Jurassic Wild brings its brand new live production to the Gleneagle Arena. “Battle of the T-Rex’s” is billed as a world premiere, and it is built around something that children and their parents genuinely want to see - full-scale animatronic dinosaurs that look and move like the real thing, performing in front of a live audience. This is the evening showing, starting at 4pm, which suits families who want to make a day of Killarney first.
The show uses cutting-edge animatronics and what the producers describe as award-winning puppetry to put some of the most convincingly lifelike dinosaurs you are likely to encounter on an Irish stage. The storyline builds through the performance to the main event - an all-out clash between T-Rexs, with the scale and drama you would expect from a large arena production. It is not a passive experience: the combination of live action, theatrical storytelling, and prehistoric creatures at close range tends to land hard with younger audiences. Under-18s must be accompanied by an adult. There is a midday showing and this 4pm showing on the same day, so if one time does not suit, the other may.
The Gleneagle Arena itself is the largest music and multi-purpose venue in Ireland outside of Dublin - a 4,000-capacity indoor arena on the Muckross Road that has hosted Riverdance, Snow Patrol, and large-scale touring musicals. It has full production facilities and is set up for this kind of theatrical spectacle.
The Gleneagle Arena sits on the Muckross Road (N71), roughly 1.5 km south of Killarney town centre - about a 20-minute walk or a very short drive. Car parking is available at the venue. Killarney is well served by rail: Irish Rail runs regular services from Cork, Limerick, and Dublin Heuston (change at Mallow for some services). The train station is in the town centre, from which the arena is an easy walk or taxi ride. Bus Eireann also connects Killarney to most major towns in Kerry and beyond.
Killarney in August is at its liveliest - the national park is right on the doorstep, with Muckross House and the lakes a short cycle or jaunting car ride from the venue. There is more to see in Killarney and across Co. Kerry.
